Woman Fakes Obituary to Gain Sympathy from Abusive Debt Creditors

You don’t have to go to the extremes one woman did recently to get a break from her bill collectors. The Associated Press reported today that a South Carolina woman submitted a fake obituary hoping to gain sympathy from her creditors. She thought the debt collectors would give her a break if they knew her daughter had been killed in Iraq.

The woman submitted a paid obituary and a photo through a local funeral home for a Air Force lieutenant she claimed was her daughter. The Post and Courier of Charleston published the obituary earlier this month. The woman now admits she made up the entire story.

This is an extreme example of the measures desperate people take to avoid creditor harassment.
