Woman Fakes Obituary to Gain Sympathy from Abusive Debt Creditors
By Jill Michaux on May 21, 2008 in Debt Collector Abuse
You don’t have to go to the extremes one woman did recently to get a break from her bill collectors. The Associated Press reported today that a South Carolina woman submitted a fake obituary hoping to gain sympathy from her creditors. She thought the debt collectors would give her a break if they knew her daughter had been killed in Iraq.
The woman submitted a paid obituary and a photo through a local funeral home for a Air Force lieutenant she claimed was her daughter. The Post and Courier of Charleston published the obituary earlier this month. The woman now admits she made up the entire story.
This is an extreme example of the measures desperate people take to avoid creditor harassment. You do not have to resort to unethical or illegal ways to stop the harassment by debt collectors who just won’t quit. Bankruptcy offers a legal way to eliminate debts and obtain a fresh start in life. See the Debt Law Network for more information about stopping abusive debt collection and the Bankruptcy Law Network for more information about the relief you can get using the bankruptcy law.
